About the Workshop

Magnetic resonance remains the technique of choice to investigate structure, dynamics and interactions of biomolecules at physiological conditions and to characterize heterogeneous materials at atomic details in the solid state. However, the strengths of magnetic resonance need to be reframed in the new general context characterized by the recent developments of NMR and EPR as well as of other structural techniques, such as cryoelectron microscopy, fluorescence, small angle scattering and mass spectrometry. This EMBO Workshop aims at grouping scientists proposing the most advanced NMR and EPR applications together with experts in combining magnetic resonance techniques with other structural and computational tools. Their synergistic application and the exploration of potential promising approaches represent key points for improving the description of the structural, dynamic and functional properties of the biomolecules inside living cells and involved in specific cellular pathways, and for addressing some of the major fundamental questions in life sciences. The EMBO Workshop aims at summing up the most promising current achievements in the magnetic resonance researches in life sciences, also to figure out the next milestones to be reached in this area.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Organisers are encouraged to implement measures to make the meeting environmentally more sustainable.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected on the basis of their abstracts, in terms of novelty, anticipated impact, relevance to the theme and objectives of the workshop, and scientific content.

Participation of scientists at an early stage of their career will be favored, and they will have opportunities to present their research through selected oral contributions, poster session and group discussions. Achieving regional and gender balance will also play an important role in selecting speakers and participants.

Abstract guidelines

The abstract text must be 2000 characters or fewer.

The first author must be the person presenting the abstract (poster or oral presentation) at the conference.

Please note that only one abstract per attendee will be accepted.

Among the regular participants and the granted students, 6 of them will be selected for a regular lecture and 9 will be selected for a short talk. Please indicate on the abstract submission form if you would like to be considered for a lecture or a short talk.

Poster specifications

Poster should be A0 size (841 mm x 1189 mm), portrait

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants' page.

A limited number of additional grants are available for students and young postdoctors to cover their registration fee:
- three grants sponsored by GIDRM for young (up to 35 years old) GIDRM members (see also http://www.gidrm.org),
- two grants sponsored by Bracco S.p.A.,
- three grants sponsored by ISMAR.
Applicants should indicate in the registration form if they wish to be considered for one of these grants, and send by email to embo@cerm.unifi.it (and to direttivo@gidrm.org for the GIDRM grants) CV and presentation letter from the supervisor, within March 31, together with a copy of the abstract submitted via the workshop website.

Two bursaries of 400 Euro are offered by EBSA to PhD students or postdocs from the EU area. Applicants should fill the form available at http://ebsa.org/portal/bursaries, and send it to embo@cerm.unifi.it
